 Ella Fitzgerald는 빌리 홀리데이(Billie Holiday), 사라 본(Sarah Vaughan)과 더불어 3대 여성 재즈

 보컬리스트로 칭송받는 아티스트이다. 빌리 홀리데이가 우울하고 깊은 감성을 표현했다면, 엘라는 아름

다운 음색과 넓은 음역을 지닌 젊고 밝은 여성적인 이미지의 대명사로 꼽을 수 있을 것이다.
  특히 엘라의 뛰어난 스캣(scat singing), 스윙(swinging virtuosity), 임프로비제이션(improvisation)

 등의 기교는 그녀를 재즈 역사상 가장 영향력 있고 비중 있는 존재로 만들었다. 결코 어두운 블루스적인

모습을 발견 할 수 없는 엘라는 사실 고아나 다름없는 가난하고   우울한 어린 시절을 보냈다.
  또한 타고난 수줍음으로 인해 엔터테이너로서의 재능을 제대로 발휘하지 못하다가,  17세 되던 해인

1934년 우연히 아폴로 극장 아마추어 콘테스트에 참가해 전설적인 색소폰 주자인 베니 카터(Benny

Carter)에게 발탁되어 칙 웹 밴드(Chick Webb)의 메인으로 활동하게 된다. 

  42년부터 그녀는 듀크 엘링턴(Duke Ellington), 베니 굿맨(Benny Goodman)등 다양한 연주자들과

함께 음악활동을 하면서 솔로로서의 기틀을 다져나갔고,  40년대 후반에 명 프로듀서이자 매니저인 노먼

 그란츠(Norman Granz)를 만나면서  국제적인 가수로 활약하게 된다.
